Snapshots and backups for your VPS

A snapshot is a copy of your server's disk at one moment. Take one before a big upgrade, so you can go back if it goes wrong.

Take a snapshot

  1. Open Snapshots, or the Snapshots tab on a server.
  2. Choose the server, and give the snapshot a name if you like (up to 40 characters). We add the date and time to the name.
  3. Choose Take snapshot.

You can keep up to 5 snapshots on your account. Delete old ones from the same page to make room.

Stop the server first for an exact copy. A snapshot of a running server copies the disk as it stands, so anything an application was part-way through writing, such as a database, is captured part-way through.

Restoring

Restoring is not self-service yet. Putting a snapshot back overwrites everything written to the server since it was taken, so we do it with you. Raise a ticket and name the snapshot.

Backups are your job

Servers do not have automatic backups. Unless you have bought a backup service from us, keeping copies of your data is your responsibility, as our terms say. A snapshot lives on the same platform as your server, so also keep a copy of anything important somewhere else, for example in object storage or on your own computer.
