Change your VPS plan (resize and rebuild)
You can move a server to a different plan from its Size tab, or from Resize.
A billed server: ask us
If your server is on a plan you pay for, the change goes through us rather than the page, so that your invoice changes with it. The page tells you when this applies. Raise a ticket, choose the server, and pick I want to change, upgrade or cancel something.
Resize: same or bigger disk
Moving to a plan with the same or a bigger disk is a resize. More or fewer processor cores and more or less memory are fine.
- Your server restarts to change plan and is unavailable while it does, usually for under a minute.
- Nothing is final until you say so. When it is done, your server's page asks you to keep the new plan or undo it. Undo puts it back exactly as it was. Until you choose, the power buttons are hidden.
Rebuild: smaller disk
A disk cannot be shrunk in place. Moving to a plan with a smaller disk is a rebuild, and a rebuild erases the disk.
- You keep the server's name, operating system, SSH key and firewall rules.
- You lose everything written to the disk, and the server gets a new IP address.
- A snapshot cannot be restored onto the smaller disk, so copy anything you need somewhere else first.
- We build the replacement first and only remove the old server once the new one is running, so if the build fails, nothing is lost.
You confirm a rebuild with three tick boxes and by typing the server's name.
There is no "reinstall the operating system" button. If you want a clean start on the same plan, ask us.
