ARM cloud servers, hosted in the UK
Everything VPS GB runs is 64-bit ARM. Virtual servers, web hosting, game servers and load balancers all run on Ampere Altra processors, in the UK. We do not sell x86, and that is a choice, not a gap.
Why only ARM
Most hosts sell x86 and offer ARM as an extra, if at all. Doing one architecture means every image we sell, every load balancer and every rescue tool is built and tested for the hardware it runs on, instead of ARM getting whatever is left.
- A whole core, not half of one. Ampere Altra cores are single-threaded. There is no hyperthread sibling sharing your core's execution units with another workload, which is where a lot of "noisy neighbour" slowdown on shared x86 hosts comes from.
- Efficient by design. Ampere built Altra for performance per watt: many simple cores at a fixed clock rather than a few cores boosting hard. For web servers, APIs, containers and databases, which spread across cores well, that is the shape of the work.
- Predictable. No turbo boost means a core runs at the same speed at 3am and at peak, so what you measure in testing is what you get.
- Where the industry is going. Apple Silicon Macs, AWS Graviton, Azure Cobalt and Google Axion are all ARM. If you develop on a recent Mac, ARM is already the architecture you build on.
What runs on ARM
Far more than most people expect. If it is open source and on Linux, it almost certainly has a native ARM build.
| Operating systems | Ubuntu, Debian, AlmaLinux, Rocky Linux, CentOS Stream, Alpine |
| Languages | PHP, Python, Node.js, Go, Rust, Java, .NET (on Linux), Ruby |
| Web and databases | nginx, Apache, Caddy, MariaDB, MySQL, PostgreSQL, Redis |
| Containers | Docker and Kubernetes, and the official images on Docker Hub, which are multi-architecture |
| Apps | WordPress, Nextcloud, Gitea, Grafana, Prometheus, and most self-hosted software |
Our own website, its database and its control panel run on the same ARM hardware we sell.
What does not
Worth knowing before you order, not after.
- Software only shipped as an x86 binary. Some commercial tools, older closed-source agents and licence managers only exist for x86.
- Windows Server and Microsoft SQL Server. SQL Server has no ARM build at all, and we do not offer Windows.
- Many game servers. Plenty of popular dedicated servers are x86 only. We only sell the games that run natively on ARM; the rest are listed as by request.
If you are not sure, ask us before you buy. We would rather tell you no than sell you a server your software cannot run on.
Check your stack in five minutes
- Containers: run
docker manifest inspect <image>and look for"architecture": "arm64". Official images nearly always have it. - Your own images: build for both with
docker buildx build --platform linux/amd64,linux/arm64. - Binaries:
file ./yourappsaysx86-64oraarch64. Interpreted code (PHP, Python, Node.js) does not care; check its native extensions and packages instead. - Try it: if it runs on an Apple Silicon Mac or a Raspberry Pi 4 or 5 under Linux, it will run here.
