IPv6, public IPv4 and your server's hostname

Your server's addresses are on its Overview tab, under Addresses. Each one is labelled as public or private, and as IPv4 or IPv6. The Connect tab shows which ones you can reach from the internet and which only from your network.

Your private network

Your servers share one private network of their own, so they can talk to each other directly. It is set up for you; see Networking. If you need more than one, ask us.

IPv6 and your hostname

Where your server has an IPv6 address, it also gets a hostname under uksouth.srvgb.com that points at it. You will find it in the Hostname panel on the server's Networking tab.

You can ask for a different name in that panel. We check each request by hand before it goes live.

The firewall manages IPv4 rules. If you need a port reachable over IPv6, raise a ticket.

Add a public IPv4 address

A public IPv4 address lets anyone on the internet reach your server over IPv4. It is a monthly add-on.

  1. Open your server's Networking tab.
  2. Choose Add a public IPv4 address. The button shows the monthly price.
  3. Pay the invoice we email you. The address is attached a few minutes after the first month is paid, and the page shows it.

If you do not pay, the order is cancelled automatically after 7 days. You can also cancel it yourself before paying.

If the button is not there, the page says why: for example, addresses are not available on your account yet, you have reached the number your account can have, or a server already has one. Ask us if you need more.

Secure it straight away. Once the address is attached, SSH (port 22) is open to the whole internet and everything else is closed. Limit SSH to your own address, and open only what you need, on the server's firewall.

Release an address

On the server's Networking tab, open Release this address and type the address to confirm. It goes back to our pool straight away and its monthly invoice stops. This cannot be undone: the next customer may be given it.
